This is a 17 minutes recording of the ATC and cockpit communication as the aircraft left and returned to KSFO. The Boeing 747 carrying 231 souls had to return to KSFO after suffering an engine failure which blew a hole in the right hand engine.

***The other traffic comms has been edited out***

Ron. What is panic and what does it sound like. I heard a higher pitch of voice early on. That is to be expected in a fast paced environment where adrenaline is pumping and decisions are being made quickly. Panic implies irrational behavior, which was no present at any time on the recording

Don’t get me wrong, the Qantas pilots handled the situation very well. The word “panic” is not the appropriate I should have used, I was actually referring to the moment when ATC instructed QF74 to turn to the heading of 040 and when it was acknowledged, the pilot paused for a half a second when repeating the instruction. When I first heard that, my reaction was to exaggerate the situation or made it more exciting than what it was.
